Tesla has secured another major energy storage order, this time in Taiwan, where growing demand for electricity from artificial intelligence (AI) data centers is creating new opportunities for the company’s Megapack business.
Taiwanese energy company Apollo Power has signed an agreement to purchase 260 Tesla Megapack 2XL battery systems, representing approximately 1 gigawatt-hour (GWh) of energy storage capacity.
The agreement was signed on October 8 with Tesla Energy Taiwan, according to the company’s stock exchange filing. Deliveries are expected to begin in late 2027, with the first projects scheduled to become operational in 2028.
AI data centers drive demand for Tesla Megapacks
The purchase comes as Taiwan’s technology industry faces growing pressure to secure reliable electricity supplies for AI infrastructure.
Apollo plans to use the Megapacks for behind-the-meter energy storage and grid resilience projects, allowing businesses to store electricity and reduce their dependence on the grid during periods of high demand.
However, not all 260 units have been allocated to customers. According to local reports, approximately 33 Megapacks are covered by signed customer agreements, with another 150 under negotiation.
Apollo is effectively securing equipment now in anticipation of future demand. The company has also partnered with technology firms Phison, Gigabyte, and Shihlin Electric to develop energy solutions supporting AI data centers.
The initiative follows a successful pilot project at Phison’s Zhunan facility, where Tesla Megapack 2XL systems were installed in June.
Tesla Energy continues global expansion
The Taiwan agreement adds to Tesla’s growing portfolio of energy storage projects supporting AI infrastructure.
As we previously reported, SpaceX has purchased hundreds of millions of dollars worth of Megapacks to support their expanding computing operations in the United States.
Tesla is also supplying Megapacks for a major Meta AI data center project in Wyoming.
With AI electricity consumption expected to increase significantly, Tesla’s energy storage business is becoming an increasingly important part of the company’s operations.
The latest agreement also highlights a shift in the AI industry, where securing sufficient electricity is becoming just as important as obtaining the chips needed to run increasingly powerful computing systems.
