特斯拉推出 Flex Connect 并网方案,超充站可先用现有电网容量开通、有望提前两年以上

Tesla unlocks faster Supercharger openings with new ‘Flex Connect’ system

Tesla has introduced a new approach to connecting Superchargers to the electrical grid that could allow charging stations to open more than two years earlier than previously possible.

While Tesla has significantly reduced construction times for new Superchargers, getting enough power from local utilities remains a major challenge. This is particularly true for high-powered Megacharger stations designed for the Tesla Semi, where projects in Southern California can face grid connection delays exceeding three years.

Tesla believes it has found a way around that problem with a system called Flex Connect.

How Tesla’s Flex Connect system works

Instead of waiting for utilities to complete expensive and time-consuming grid upgrades, Flex Connect allows Superchargers to begin operating using existing electrical capacity.

When sufficient power is available, stations can operate at full capacity. During periods of high electricity demand, utilities can temporarily reduce the power available to the site.

Tesla says drivers should notice little difference, particularly at newer locations where charging demand is typically low.

The company has already been working with Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) in California, accelerating several Supercharger projects with dozens more underway.

Tesla also confirmed that its V4 Supercharger cabinets can now communicate directly with utility systems using the IEEE 2030.5 standard, allowing charging power to be adjusted based on forecast electricity demand.

Several pilot stations are scheduled to open in October, followed by a wider rollout in Northern California.

What could this mean for Canada?

The technology could eventually benefit Canada’s Supercharger network, particularly in smaller communities where electrical infrastructure may not have enough capacity to support a new high-powered charging station without significant upgrades.

Rather than waiting years for those improvements, Tesla could potentially open stations with reduced capacity and increase available power as the local grid is upgraded.

However, it is important to distinguish these situations from the delays experienced at several Canadian Supercharger locations.

Numerous Canadian projects have remained inactive for months, sometimes more than a year, after construction was completed. Those delays are not necessarily caused by insufficient grid capacity, but can also involve utility equipment availability, namely transformers.

Flex Connect would not resolve those issues if the equipment needed to safely energize a station is still missing.

Tesla has not announced any Canadian utilities participating in the program, but the technology could provide another option for expanding its charging network into smaller and more remote communities.
