Starlink
SpaceX Starlink Receives Approval to Operate in Venezuela
SpaceX has received official approval to offer Starlink satellite internet in Venezuela, clearing the way for the company to establish a permanent presence in the South American country.
Venezuela’s interim President Delcy Rodriguez authorized the service as part of an agreement with SpaceX, according to a government announcement on Friday.
The country’s telecommunications regulator, Conatel, approved a general operating licence and seven concessions covering the Ku-band frequencies used by Starlink terminals to communicate with satellites.
The approval means Starlink can now operate legally through its locally registered company, SpaceX VZ, S.C.A., rather than relying on temporary authorizations.
How Starlink Got Here
Starlink first stepped in after the June 24 earthquakes in La Guaira knocked out internet and cell service, handing out more than 1,600 terminals according to the U.S. Embassy in Caracas.
SpaceX also worked with local mobile operators to test satellite-to-phone messaging, allowing text messages to be sent without relying on traditional cellular infrastructure. Those trials were followed by discussions between SpaceX and Conatel in July, eventually leading to this week’s regulatory approval.
Although Starlink equipment was already available in Venezuela, the company had not previously received authorization to operate as a permanent telecommunications provider.
SpaceX hasn’t said when sales start or what service will cost in Venezuela.
