Escalade IQ
GM CEO Confirms Eyes-Off Autonomous Driving Technology Remains on Track for 2028 Debut
General Motors is sticking to its plans to introduce a new autonomous driving system in 2028, with CEO Mary Barra saying the technology has made significant progress in recent months.
Speaking with CNBC’s Jim Cramer on Monday, Barra said the 2028 target still holds, with the Cadillac Escalade IQ getting the system first.
Barra recently experienced the technology firsthand and said the improvements since her previous test in March were noticeable.
“They’re making so much progress on our goal to have eyes off, hands off in the ’28 time frame,” Barra said. “We’re going to be well positioned from a personal autonomy perspective.”
Moving Beyond Super Cruise
GM’s upcoming system represents a major step beyond Super Cruise, which currently allows hands-free driving on compatible roads but still requires drivers to watch the road.
The new technology will initially operate on highways, letting drivers look away from the road while it’s engaged. Unlike vision-only systems, GM is developing its technology using a combination of lidar, radar, and cameras.
A Different Approach to Autonomy
The pivot comes nearly two years after GM shut down Cruise’s robotaxi operation in December 2024, having sunk over $10 billion into it.
Rather than competing in the crowded driverless ride-hailing market, GM is using Cruise’s technology and engineering expertise to develop autonomous driving features for privately owned vehicles.
“We’re not in the taxi business. We’re not in the bus business,” Barra explained.
The company also plans to introduce a new centralized computing platform in 2028 to support its autonomous driving ambitions.
For GM, the goal is to give customers the flexibility to drive themselves or let their vehicles handle the journey, without giving up personal vehicle ownership.
