Volkswagen recalls over 28,000 ID.4s in Canada and the U.S. over battery fire risk

More than 28,000 ID.4s in Canada and the U.S. are being recalled by Volkswagen because the SUV’s high-voltage pack may overheat and start a fire, a risk that remains even when the vehicle is shut off and parked.

Until a permanent fix is available, Volkswagen is advising affected owners to limit charging to 80%.

The two recalls cover 22,524 vehicles in the U.S. and 5,633 in Canada. The Canadian recall published by Transport Canada covers the 2023, 2024, and 2025 model years. In the United States, the recall covers ID.4 SUVs from the 2023 through 2026 model years.

According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Volkswagen has not yet determined exactly what is causing the battery failures.

However, its investigation found that certain charging patterns, combined with battery levels exceeding 80%, could trigger thermal propagation, potentially resulting in a fire.

The affected batteries contain cells supplied by SK Battery America. Only a tiny fraction of the U.S. vehicles, around 0.1% by Volkswagen’s estimate, is believed to carry the defect.

The automaker ordered a field study in June while reviewing reports of battery overheating. By September, its safety committee had gathered enough information to authorize the recall.

Volkswagen identified 22 claims in the U.S. between January 2024 and August 2026, although the filing does not specify how many involved actual fires.

For now, owners are being asked to manually adjust their charging limits. Some vehicles may eventually receive an automatic 80% charging restriction, while Volkswagen continues developing a permanent repair.

The latest recall comes as Volkswagen prepares to sunset the ID.4 and replace it with the newly announced ID. Tiguan.

Owners can check their vehicle’s recall status through Volkswagen Canada or NHTSA.
