SpaceX Restricts Starlink in Ukraine, Disrupting Military Drone Operations

SpaceX has reportedly introduced new restrictions on Starlink service in Ukraine, forcing military units to cancel drone missions and raising questions about the timing of the changes.

The restrictions were implemented overnight on October 13 and affect Starshield, the military-grade version of SpaceX’s satellite internet service. According to Ukrainian presidential adviser Serhiy Beskrestnov, terminals travelling faster than 160 km/h are now subject to connectivity limitations.

“Our defence forces did not receive a warning about this limitation, and this led to the disruption of several missions,” Beskrestnov wrote on Telegram.

The impact has already been felt on the battlefield. Ukraine’s 7th Rapid Reaction Corps confirmed that several drone operations had been cancelled, with some aircraft experiencing temporary connection losses even below the reported speed threshold.

“According to our observations, during flights, the connection could drop for 10–20 seconds at speeds of just 110–120 km/h. The drones kept moving, but these interruptions made them harder to control,” the unit told Reuters.

Starlink has become essential to Ukraine’s military since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. Beyond providing communications between frontline units, the network supports reconnaissance, supply deliveries, and drones used to intercept Russian attacks and strike military targets in occupied territory.

The restrictions come as the Trump administration pressures Ukraine to stop targeting Russian oil refineries. Beskrestnov suggested the changes could be politically motivated, although no evidence has emerged linking SpaceX’s decision to Washington’s demands.

Earlier this year, SpaceX worked with Ukrainian authorities to disable unauthorized Starlink terminals being used by Russian forces.
